A little steam behind the line

Posted by Number 1 fan on 20. April 2009 14:42

On Friday the Bengals added much needed depth at the running back position.  Gary Russell has to be absolutely pumped to be able to play in the NFL and no longer have to wear the ugliest uniforms of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I can see Russell becoming a nice 3rd down and power back that would compliment Cedric Benson.  Here is a guy with super bowl experience (scored a TD in the last championship game) and knows the division.  He also played as a kick returner for the Steelers in the 3 season he was in Pitt.

Assuming Russell makes the roster, this puts Chris Perry on the outs with the Bengals.  Perry had his opportunity to own the starting job and failed miserably when he played.  I think the Bengals have to keep the scrappy change of pace back Kenny Watson and they usually don't keep more than three running backs.

Good pickup by the Bengals.

Russell doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who would fumble the ball 5 times and lose 3 of them in a 5 game stretch.  Benson looks like he'll be in good company.

Don't jinx it.  Perry was awesome in 2005 but when given the job he literally fumbled it away.

I think Russell will be a great addition to the back field.

I agree Perry was awesome in 2005 but he was awesome because he was used in the correct way.  Perry is not a 1st or 2nd down, between the tackles running back.  He is best as a 3rd down speed back who can catch out of the backfield like Felix Jones in Dallas or Reggie Bush in New Orleans.
