Connor Barwin

Posted by Number 1 fan on 22. April 2009 13:52

It wouldn't be fair to have a sports blog in Cincinnati and not mention Connor Barwin.  This is a University of Cincinnati tight end that was asked to play defensive end his senior year.  As a tight end Connor Barwin had a good shot of getting to the NFL as a late round draft pick or undrafted free agent.  As a defensive end he has a decent shot at being a first day draft pick.  Some would say it is a Cinderella story but I am not going to be the guy that compares Connor to a princess or whatever.

Blogs around the country are singing the praises of this kid (links below) and why not?  He only weighs 256, runs the 40 in 4.47 (blazing) and tossed up the 225lb bench 23 times.  He also was a special teams standout and pretty good tight end.  Many in the sports world have been comparing him to Mike Vrabel of the Patriots. (not to shabby)

Good luck this weekend Connor, my only hope is that you stay out of Cleveland, Pitt or Baltimore.

Not to mention Barwin saw action on a shorthanded UC basketball squad his Freshman and Sophomore years. This guy has a ton of talent and could become a great NFL player.

I see Barwin falling anywhere from pick 20 to pick 40 in the draft this year.  No UC player has been drafted in the first round since quarterback Greg Cook, who coincidentally was drafted by the Bengals in 1969.  Not only was Barwin instrumental in getting the Bearcats to their first BCS bowl game (which I attended) but he's a walking billboard for UC's football program.

Barwin is athletic as anyone in the draft.  The versatility this guy has from his stint at basketball, to playing TE, and being moved to DE his senior year just reeks of commitment to excelling!  He is going to be a gem in the draft.  I agree with Cincyfan though I hope he doesn't land with the bad guys!  Nice post!

There are certainly a lot more details to take into consideration, but thanks for sharing this post.
